UK Gender Pay Gap: What the Data Really Shows
An honest look at the UK gender pay gap using anonymous salary data. Which roles have the biggest gaps, and where is progress being made?
The State of the UK Gender Pay Gap
The gender pay gap remains a persistent issue in the UK workforce. Using anonymous salary submissions from WhatDoIEarn, we can see where the gaps are widest โ and where they're closing.
Overall Numbers
Across all submissions, men earn approximately 8-12% more than women in equivalent roles. This is broadly consistent with ONS data, but our role-specific breakdowns reveal a more nuanced picture.
Where Gaps Are Widest
Finance and senior management roles show the largest gaps, often exceeding 15%. Sales roles with commission-based pay also show significant disparities.
Where Progress Is Happening
Technology roles show some of the smallest gaps, particularly at junior and mid levels. Public sector roles (teaching, NHS) have near-parity due to standardised pay scales.
What You Can Do
Salary transparency is the first step. By sharing your salary anonymously, you help others negotiate better. Knowledge is power โ and data is the foundation of fair pay.
